The Backstretch Education Fund--a small grassroots nonprofit based in Long Island--seeks a talented, passionate, and experienced bilingual individual who can work closely with a small staff and the backstretch worker community at Belmont Race Track to shape and oversee our educational and recreational programs in ESL, horsemanship, computer literacy and US citizenship.

BEF provides educational and personal development opportunities for the backstretch workers of New York State’s thoroughbred racetracks. Workers at Belmont, Aqueduct, and Saratoga—mostly Latino immigrants—endure long hours for little pay and face poor living conditions as they move from track to track with their racing teams. Our programs at Belmont, the heart of the racing community, enable these workers to create better lives for themselves.

The Program Director is a newly-created part-time (15-20 hours per week) role that encompasses a broad range of managerial and administrative duties, including but not limited to:
Supervising ESL classes (Monday and Tuesday 10 AM to 4 PM), tracking attendance and recruiting efforts in spreadsheets.
Regularly visiting and supervising activities at the computer lab (Monday-Thursday evenings)
Submitting a bi-weekly report to the organization’s leadership on the status and progress of all BEF programs.
Managing teacher and assistant schedules and payroll.

An IDEAL Candidate would:
Speak fluent Spanish and English
Have a car for transport to/from/around the race track.
Care deeply about the issues facing Latino immigrant communities in the United States, particularly within the horse racing industry.
Love working independently with lots of different people in a fast-paced blue collar environment.
Have experience working in a management/supervisory role in social services, government, education, or at any kind of non-profit/volunteer organization.

Interested candidates should submit a resume and cover letter.
